Waiting for the cure

Article Abstract:

The spread of the deadly SARS disease (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) is traced from China to other parts of the world, and available information is provided about the pandemic, such as symptoms to look out for and precautions to protect oneself. The reasons for the prevalent uncertainty about the disease in the scientific community are discussed, and while the world waits for a cure, people are informed about what to expect in the near future.

This article discusses how the policies of the Chinese government have hindered efforts to combat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Beijing has restricted access to information about the earliest known cases, been slow in reporting the number of infections and downplayed the disease's dangers.

The long political turmoil and speculation regarding who will be the next president of China has finally ended, with Hu Jintao coming to power. However it would be vain to expect any major changes, as Hu is more concerned with keeping the party under control than reforming.
