Wal-Mart makes Euro 10.3 billion offer for the U.K.'s Asda; U.S. retailing giant cuts in on Kingfisher, signaling big changes in Europe; over 100,000 items on sale

Article Abstract:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc (Bentonville, AR) has offered 10.3 billion euros for Asda Group PLC, the 3rd largest food retailer in the United Kingdom. The Wal-Mart offer is expected to sink Kingfisher PLC's chances of acquiring Asda. If approved, Wal-Mart's acquisition of Asda is expected to set off a wave of consolidations in Europe's already highly competitive retail sector, and change the face of European retailing. Over 100 million people worldwide already shop at Wal-Mart each week, and Wal-Mart stores carry over 100,000 items each on average.
