In an attempt to improve its recent weak profits , Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is planning to refocus on its core customers, with a strong emphasis on better customer service. Recent attempts to attract wealthier customers by offering better quality goods have failed, and may have had a negative impact on the chain's core shoppers .

Wal-Mart cancels its bank plan: halt to 'ILC' effort is move by retailer to stop controversy

Article Abstract:

Amid cricitism from community bankers and other groups, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has cancelled plans to open an industrial- loan company, withdrawing its application to The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Wal-Mart will focus instead on offering financial services that don't need an ILC charter.

Wal-Mart curtails planned expansion of German stores

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is reducing the scale of its planned expansion strategy in Germany. The company originally planned to open up to 50 stores in the German market by 2003, but will now open less that amount over the next few years.
