Walking on energy-saving air

Article Abstract:

Designers are using steel in the construction of buildings to control variations in temperature. Using external air at night to transfer heat from the structure so it is cool the next day is known as fabric energy storage. Research has shown that the location and ventilation of the thermal mass used, such as concrete or steel, improves the efficiency of the process. There are two types of natural cooling systems, passive and active, with research concluding that active systems give a greater degree of control and better performance.

Product review

Article Abstract:

A number of key trends are visible in the design of suspended ceilings, partitions and raised floors in the UK. Manufacturers of partitioning systems are emphasizing ease and cost of relocation, while with suspended ceilings there is a shift towards exposed structural soffitts to aid low-energy temperature regulation through using thermal mass. For raised floors, designs need to take account of the large volumes of power and data cabling needed in modern offices.
