War dance

Article Abstract:

Israeli jets have bombed power plants in Lebanon in Jun 1999, and this has left Beirut with no power. Five bridges have also been destroyed, as has a communications center. The government of Binyamin Netanyahu is still in power as a caretaker government, though the newly elected leader has promised a withdrawal from Lebanon. The caretaker government refuses to answer complaints about the raid. The Lebanese economy could be affected by the raid, though there have been promises to help with reconstruction. Syria is not concerned and is looking to the future when peace can be negotiated with the new government.

Israel's mess in Lebanon

Article Abstract:

The Israeli army faces problems in southern Lebanon, which it has occupied for 21 years. Guerillas have developed skills to destroy Israeli tanks and dugouts before disappearing. The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, announced a withdrawal of forces on conditions that attacks across the border by Hizbullan guerillas would cease. The offer was rejected by the Lebanese government, which seeks unconditional withdrawal in line with a resolution of the United Nations Security Council.
