A giant awakes

Article Abstract:

The Democratic Republic of Congo could exert strong influence on central and east Africa, if Laurent Kabila can mobilize the country to tap its vast mineral and hydroelectric resources. Congo's relations with its neighbors and the US and France, former supporters of the ousted Mobutu Sese Seko, are discussed.

High hopes fade in Congo

Article Abstract:

Many citizens of Congo, formerly called Zaire, had high hopes for dramatic change in the country as Laurent Kabila became president, but there is little indication that such change will take place. The country remains under military rule, reminiscent of Mobutu Sese Seko's reign.
