War of words

Article Abstract:

Poets have long debated the usage of language, and whether poetry should be written in a literary way, or whether it should more faithfully reflect the spoken word in the street. US poets who developed anti-academic verse include John Ashbery and Kenneth Koch, who started in the early 1950s. Raymond Carver wrote poetry in a very personal way, while Mark Doty was inspired to write his latest two collections after his companion died from AIDS. Amy Clampitt, published late in life, is able to craft stanzas that are syntactically convoluted, and can teach aspiring poets a great deal.
