Article Abstract:

A village in Hong Kong's rural northern districts is flying a new Chinese flag in anticipation of Chinese rule in five months' time. The villagers of Kat Hing Wai fought a skirmish against British soldiers in 1898 after London took out a 99 year lease on the northern region. Many of the rural residents of the New Territories are welcoming Chinese rule, although they will face higher land taxes and increased threats from illegal immigrants. The northern district board will welcome the Chinese army garrison to be stationed in Hong Kong, although many residents are unnerved by it.

Article Abstract:

China is promoting a new industrial policy in Hong Kong after reunification which would focus more on manufacturing than currently. Hong Kong is dependent on services industries and many of the few manufacturing firms are leaving while only .1% of Hong Kong's gross domestic product goes to research and development. This change from a service focus is supported even by Hong Kong industrialists for the benefit of Hong Kong rather than the transfer of technology to China. Already, some Hong Kong firms are adopting more aggressive research and development programs.

Article Abstract:

Shiu Sin-por, who is in charge of the One Country, Two Systems Research Institute, and advises the Chinese government on matters relating to Hong Kong, predicts that Hong Kong will become a second-ranking trading centre with much unemployment in the early 2000s if it does not redefine its economic agenda. Shiu, who is also the deputy secretary-general of the Preparatory Committee set up by the Chinese government to look after the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, appears to have spoken out to ensure that important economic issues are not washed over.
