Welcome to Europe

Article Abstract:

The European Union seeks to add to its numbers in July 1997. The European Union hopes to expand by opening discussions with Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Estonia. The outlook for European unity is questionable because of the difficult process of becoming a member. Member nations must be democracies with no human rights violations. They must adhere to European market regulations. The process should be made clearer so that each potential member knows what it takes to join. Current EU countries are expected to oppose the would-be members because the poorer Eastern countries could drain the organization's regional assistance budget.

Eventually supreme?

Article Abstract:

The European Court of Justice is located in Luxembourg, and has as much power as the European Parliament of the European Commission. The court has an increasing workload, and wants greater flexibility in its rules. The court's jurisdiction includes visas, immigration and asylum, following the Amsterdam treaty. A 'charter on fundamental rights' is being drafted in 2000, and this could mean that the court's activities move toward those of the European Court of Human Right. The EU is also expanding, which means that the court's geographical coverage will increase.
