Welcome withdrawn: Taiwan puts the squeeze on foreign workers

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's 1992 Employment Services Act has forced many foreign white-collar workers to leave the country and placed those who remain under the threat of prosecution for violating the regulations that enforce the law. This law has diminished Taiwan's prospect of becoming a regional business center. A key case is the impending trial of an American, Philip Diller of Pristine Translation and Information Consultants, for employing his wife, Tammy Turner, after she had been deported in Aug 1992. This case will test the ability of foreigners to stay in business in Taiwan.

Hazardous business: China offers site for Taiwan niclear waste

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese officials revealed a plan for developing a nuclear waste storage site in China. Both sides have already agreed on some major points of the plan except for the exact location of the dumpsite. Taiwan plans to pay China by helping in the development of the latter's nuclear technology and conducting joint studies on waste storage techniques. Some officials believe that this project may be part of China's plan of rushing up the reunification of the two nations.

Asia's richest, but also dirtiest

Article Abstract:

A side effect of Taiwan's accelerated growth in the past years is environmental degradation of tremendous proportions, making it Asia's richest but dirtiest nation. Contributing factors to this situation are the people's obsession with commerce and economic growth at the expense of all else and policy inconsistencies which have diminished the Environmental Protection Administration's credibility and undermined trust in government.
