Nigel Rich's announcement that he will step down as managing director of Jardine Matheson Holdings will probably have little effect on the business strategy of Hongkong's oldest trading-and-property concerns. The group announced a 14% after-tax increase in earnings for the first half of 1993 and continues to search for a successful strategy for diversification before the Chinese takeover of Hongkong in 1997. Rich put the company back on its feet after taking over in the mid-1980s, making Jardine one of the best in the business.

Traders are beginning to cast doubts on the effectivity of Taiwan's traditional stock-offering system after adisastrous effort by the government to privatize the state-owned China Steel Corp. Stock-offer rules allowing an issue's price to be set to a certain amounteven before applications are given out will fail to producee any dependable indicator for demand. Unless capital-market reforms are to be implemented, issuers have no other prerogative but to sell shares at a steep discount to ensure a market sellout.
