Well chuffed

Article Abstract:

Artist David Mach has produced a very impressive sculpture of a train in brick for Darlington, England. This is 40 mt long and up to 7 mt high, and uses 185,000 red engineering bricks. Mach regards these bricks as an everyday material with close links with the railway engineering tradition. The skeleton of the sculpture is formed by orthogonal diaphragm walls along its full length, covered with a precast concrete slab. A double veneer of bricks forms the external contour.

Good bookeeping

Article Abstract:

The British Library was designed by Sandy Wilson of Colin St John Wilson & Partners, who used brick because he felt the look of the building would improve with age. Almost 1.5 million red bricks were used in the building of the British Library, which is located next to St Pancras station in London. Marble has been used in conjunction with red brick to highlight patterns, while internal brickwork has managed to achieve a consistent colour throughout large brickwork areas.

Learning flexibility

Article Abstract:

Supreme winner of the UK 1997 Brick Awards was won by Hackney Community College in London, for clever use of brick work in a 25 million pounds sterling rejuvenation of the campus and surrounding area. The judges felt the development provided a functional yet welcoming environment which used brick to its full potential. The college was jointly designed by Perkins Ogden Architects and Hampshire County Architects, who began working on the project in 1993.
