What political risk?

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's economic fundamentals remain strong, even though there has been social unrest recently. The government predicts that GDP growth will slow down to 7.1% in the fiscal year 1997-1998, with the current-account deficit widening to $9.8 billion. Investors seem to have set aside concerns about the country's political situation, and shares on Jakarta's stock exchange continue to set new records. There was an influx of foreign capital in 1996 as a result of high interest rates and a continued boom in direct investment.

Family planning

Article Abstract:

President Suharto's children and other relations dominate much of the business world in Indonesia, but those ties are often seen as drawbacks, especially when fears arise about Suharto's ability to remain in power. The youngest son, Hutomo Mandala Putra, raises the most concern, given apparently weak management in his companies and a troubled track record in business. Bambang Trihatmodjo's Bimantara Citra has the strongest following, with his sister Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana's toll-road company CMNP close behind.

First friend

Article Abstract:

Mohamad 'Bob' Hasan has been very close to Indonesian president Suharto for many years, and is now set to extend his influence to the country's economy as he becomes involved in a number of very significant corporate acquisitions. He has taken on a central role in the Indonesian economy, and many observers feel that this development has taken place with the approval of President Suharto. Tension within the Suharto family has also made Hasan into an arbiter for the business interests of this family.
