What the Task Force wants

Article Abstract:

The UK's Urban Task Force has submitted its recommendations concerning urban development. The key recommendation is that spatial masterplanning should be a prerequisite of the allocation of planning permits and public funding for urban regeneration schemes. The report's recommendations encompass 11 aspects of urban development including management of land contamination, restoration of buildings, and management of the release of land. The Task Force is keen to see investment in urban development skills training and it addresses transportation policy and density issues.

Cities of deprivation: attempts to improve our cities on a grand scale ignore the needs of those who are increasingly excluded from the benefits

Article Abstract:

There has been a new emphasis on quality in the urban environment throughout the 1990s, with focus on entrepreneurial regeneration via a number of dramatic projects. It is likely that the most exciting new economic developments will take place in the cities, but less fortunate groups may not play much of a role in them, finding themselves in, but not of the city. Many young people of the city are alienated from the educational process and withdrawn from the informational economy.

Signs of the Tyne: Newcastle is home to some of the finest architecture in the country, and is a thriving 'party town', yet needs an integrated approach to fulfil its potential

Article Abstract:

Newcastle upon Tyne was an important Medieval walled town, and the city centre was redeveloped during the nineteenth century. Much of Newcastle's architectural inheritance was lost throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but the new Grainger Town Project aims to regenerate the part of the city that is much admired architecturally.
