What to expect from an expert witness: expert witnesses are usually commissioned by solicitors, but it is essential that architects have a say in their selection

Article Abstract:

There has been an increase in claims against building consultants and architects have borne the brunt because of their role as team leader. The increase is partly due to the move towards patronage of the developer, whose interest is mainly fiscal, combined with new building materials, and changes in contracting methods. Construction disputes are usually heard by the circuit judges of the High Court, the Official Referees and the role of the expert witness has grown. Expert witnesses are able to give the courts explanation of certain specialist aspects of a case.

When profit comes before public health

Article Abstract:

There are clear arguments to support the view that privatisation can make a company much more efficient. However, this has not necessarily been the case with the UK's privatised utilities. Most recently, developments at Yorkshire Water have shown that corporate profit is being placed before public health. Consumers have faced disrupted supplies and leakage rates remain high, while employees have been hit with wage cuts and corporate profits have continued to rise.
