Where size is everything

Article Abstract:

Bennetts Associates won the increasingly rare brief to design a large industrial building. The massive building was for diesel generator manufacturers Cummins Engine Company Ltd. It stands on flat, rural land in Kent, England and houses equipment for the construction of generator sets weighing 40 tonnes. Cummins needed a world-class building, a concept which encompasses quality at a reasonable cost and the provision of good working conditions. The architects have created a new high standard for buildings of this nature, particularly through their successful use of colour and natural light.

Design for learning

Article Abstract:

Feilden Clegg architects had two main design briefs for the Berrill Building at the UK's Open University in Milton Keynes. It had to produce a building which would be an entrance focus for the campus, which has no resident students, and the building had to be as environmentally-friendly as possible. The resulting five-storey building rises above the surrounding trees to announce the university's presence. Its design suggests a corporate headquarters rather than the traditional university. The internal spaces are open-plan with a height of 3.2 meters to permit good cross ventilation.
