Where the Furbies come from

Article Abstract:

Toys are produced in China for major US and other western companies such as Mattel and Fisher-Price. China is a world leader in the production of toys and together with Hong Kong accounts for around 60% of the global toy trade, rising to 70% if Hong Kong plants in locations in South-East Asia are included. China has advantages such as land and cheap labor which help in an industry affected by fashion changes which make long runs difficult. High-tech toys are also produced in Guangdong and represent a growing trend.

Big game hunting

Article Abstract:

The Japanese toy market is worth $8 billion and has remained flat for the three years to 1999, with computer games and other new products taking market share from traditional toys. There are fewer children under 14 and each is spending less than in the days of the bubble economy. Mattel is interested in this market, and there is speculation that it could bid for Bandai, the biggest Japanese company in the industry. Bandai could instead merge with Tomy, which has benefited from restructuring.
