Who's got the last laugh?

Article Abstract:

The major five UK accountancy firms are becoming increasingly involved as lead advisers in mergers and acquisitions deals. They point out they have several advantages over investment banks, which have traditionally led deals, such as tax advisers on site and a history of building good relationships with customers. They are planning to expand their merger and acquisition operation into Europe. Some accountancy firms have developed sufficient expertise in the business to lead hostile bids. The hostile bid for Bilton by Slough Estates was led by accountants Pricewaterhouse-Coopers.

Price Waterhouse by the sea

Article Abstract:

UK accountancy firm Price Waterhouse set up its Southampton corporate finance practice in 1989 when it was the first such operation on the UK South coast. Partner Robert Conway says that this allowed the firm to gain a foothold in a virgin market. Initially, Price Waterhouse focused on developing relationships with firms and individuals, and Conway believes this helped Price Waterhouse achieve and maintain its dominance of the corporate finance market. Conway insists that his team are corporate financiers, not accountants: they create deals, not just act on them.
