Why greens should love trade

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists are concerned about the impact of trade, and they have top be taken seriously since they influence public opinion. They are partly right in that some trade can damage the environment, but generally trade promotes economic growth, and richer countries tend to focus more on environmental issues. There should be a focus on environmental laws rather than a curb on free trade. Businesses do not find environmental legislation as costly as is sometimes thought, and reputations are enhanced by pursuing green policies.

Fruits de la Mersey

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom waterways are becoming less polluted, and healthy fish are becoming more common in rivers such as the Thames and Mersey. Effective legislation started in the 1960s, though there were earlier laws which were not taken seriously. Water utilities and chemical companies have had to control pollution from their operations. Some wildlife appears to benefit from limited amounts of sewage pollution, and a reduction in pollution could mean fewer fish and acquatic birds of certain types.

Cleaner energy

Article Abstract:

Concern about global warning has ebbed, and many countries in Europe are moving away from commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. There has been some support for renewable energy sources, but policies have tended to be confused. A carbon tax is the easiest way to cut carbon content in power, and it would reduce the different between renewable energy and carbon fuel costs. There are political obstacles to carbon taxes, but they could be offset by a reduction of taxation elsewhere.
