Will Abidjan remain a West African oasis?

Article Abstract:

Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast, has long been a popular location for multinationals looking for an area in which to establish themselves in Africa, providing a more sedate atmosphere than is available in the Nigerian capital of Lagos or other cities in the area. The country's president, Felix Houphouet Boigny, has nurtured a politically and economically stable environment in which the Western firms can operate, but questions remain about the transfer of power upon the aged leader's departure from the presidency. The political and economic outlook for the country and the succession problems that it has yet to resolve are described.

Johnson Matthey heads west

Article Abstract:

Johnson Matthey (JM) is looking to increase its emphasis on electronic materials, moving away from precious metals. As part of this policy, it has made a $170.2 million cash tender offer for Advance Circuits Inc (ACI), one of the leading US suppliers of high technology multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) for electronics applications. According to some observers, the purchase is also designed to allow JM to remain competitive with Cookson.
