Formula One (F1) motor racing is worth up to 1 billion pounds sterling to the UK economy in 1999, making it one of the most important industries in the country. The high levels of investment injected into the sport return investment ratios of up to 25%, which is better than the pharmaceutical and engineering sectors. The specialist nature of F1 has resulted in a large number of small firms being supported by and working for the industry, developing new technologies and showcasing British workmanship. The enforced withdrawal of tobacco sponsorship by 2002 is expected provide greater business sponsorship opportunities.

Hong Kong: China's middleman

Article Abstract:

Business and industry in Hong Kong is likely to carry on as usual because the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 guarantees that Hong Kong will still be a free port; it will not pay taxes to China; English common law will be used and there will be free and easy access to visitors. These safeguards are not widely recognised outside Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Government Office is running seminars in the UK to address these misapprehensions. However, there remain concerns that China's attitude towards Hong Kong may be affected by its relations with the western world.

Lakeland Plastics Ltd., based in Windemere, England, is a mail-order company that specializes in selling kitchenware. The company, founded in 1975 by Alan Rayner, father of the current managing director Sam Rayner, reported a pre-tax profit of 4 million pounds sterling in 1996, up 42.8% from 2.8 million pounds sterling in 1995. Lakeland Plastics' success lies in the loyalty of its customers and its focus on core products, such as its useful kitchen gadgets. The company is to change its name to simply Lakeland Ltd. from 1 August 1997.
