Winning in a wired world: Telecoms is traditionally big business, with smaller companies only being able to afford the basics

Article Abstract:

Telecoms enables organizations to operate and survive in the modern world. Information technology (IT) is another technology category common to most businesses, incorporating software, hardware and services. SMEs have the most to gain in following telecoms trends set by larger companies, but many smaller companies have not yet adopted new technology. Large companies are choosing managed voice and data services from the big telecoms operators. Telephone companies are emphasizing the importance of data communications, and the intranet and extranet require high-quality telecoms. Mobile phone technology is shaping new ways of working, with the need to deliver data services to mobile workers.

Article Abstract:

Absenteeism due to sickness costs UK employers an average of 485 pounds sterling per employee per year. Employers may introduce an absenteeism policy, which could include reviews of absenteeism or attendance bonuses. These policies are generally successful in increasing attendance, but employers may also need to address underlying problems, including unsociable working hours. A commitment to a healthier working environment, which includes the introduction of health promotion schemes, health checks, and attention to stressors, should reduce absenteeism.

The UK government is encouraging businesses to help employees who wish to change their life styles for the better. Smoking, healthy eating, exercise and levels of alcohol intake are four key areas which should be addressed in the workplace. Canteens should be encouraged to prepare healthy, fat free foods, while smokers should be supported thorough cessation programmes in the workplace. Business will benefit from a healthier workforce, which currently costs up to 14 billion pounds sterling in sick leave.
