Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that the problems facing Afghanistan will be resolved quickly, according to poet Humera Rahi. She is a professor of Persian literature and a member of the Women's Committee of Hizbe Wahadat, the main Hazara party, but has gained most respect for her poetry. She mixes Shia Islamic imagery and references to battles fought by Muslims in Arabia many years ago. She began writing poetry in the Persian dialect Dari in the 1960s, and has been published in literary journals in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran.

Mr. Clean: new army chief represents break with tradition

Article Abstract:

Pakistanis greeted the appointment of Lt-Gen Jehangir Karamat as the Chief of Army Staff in Dec 1995 with unprecedented approval. Seen as a professional and competent officer, Karamat is politcally neutral. He faces a daunting slew of challenges, however, including Islamic fundamentalism, overextended terms for top officers, nepotism within the army, and criticism of military spending. Tensions with India and Afghanistan remain troubling, and violence in Karachi threatens to destabilize the central govt.

Learning English: language seen as the key to success in life

Article Abstract:

Keeness for learning the English language is most evident among young Central Asians in Kazakhstan. Thisability is percieved as the key that would unlock financial opportunities ranging from work or business with foreign companies to marriage to a rich foreigner. This development has made Kazakhstan the most cosmopolitan of all Central Asian republics as student lifestyle have also started to reflect Western inclinations.
