Protecting the Sistine Chapel frescoes with air-conditioning

Article Abstract:

The restored frescoes of the Sistine Chapel have to be protected from pollution, temperature changes and, most importantly, moisture created by the 10,000 visitors a day. The Vatican staff, in conjunction with Carrier Corp. modelled the air flow and climate of the chapel. Air conditioning equipment has been installed as a result that will keep the interior at a slightly positive pressure, filter and wash the air and control temperature and himidity before introducing it above head height. The system is partially operative and is proving successful.
