Writing for the love of it: Robert Harbison's writing on architecture is infused with his love of buildings, and places enjoyment above didacticism

Article Abstract:

Robert Harbison was born in Baltimore and studied literature at Cornell, later gravitating towards architecture. He came to Britain in 1971 and his first book Eccentric Spaces, was published in 1977. He taught architectural history at the AA for almost 15 years and he now teaches at the University of North London. He was inspired by T S Eliot and William Empson as a young literature student, and his interest in architecture stems from an enthusiasm for John Ruskin, with whom he feels a great empathy. He approaches the subject of architectural history thematically, incorporating ideas as well as facts in his lectures.
