Yangtze guardian

Article Abstract:

It is vital that action is taken immediately to salvage extremely valuable archaeological and historical treasures from the Three Gorges project on the Yangtze river in China, according to professor Yu Weichao, director of Beijing's National Museum of Chinese History. The project will turn the central part of the river into the largest dam in the world, and the water level in the historical Three Gorges region is already beginning to rise. The region is regarded as particularly significant because it was a meeting place for very different cultures.

Goodbye to all that

Article Abstract:

The Rennie's Mill community of refugee Nationalist soldiers in Hong Kong finally succumbed to official pressure, with its people leaving in the face of a July 1, 1996, deadline. The former KMT soldiers created a tight-knit community, but their shops and huts are now giving way to a subway line and a residential development. Residents received in compensation $84 for each square foot of their homes, though the High Court ruled the government also must pay damages for breaching an agreement.

Missing links

Article Abstract:

Fossilized bones from Sihetun, China, may finally resolve the debate about whether modern birds evolved from dinosaurs. The bones, which are to be presented at a press conference in the US on Jun 23, 1998, include two specimens of Sinosauropteryx, along with Protarchaeopteryx, a land-running bird, and a specimen of the beaked bird Confuciusornis. A range of questions are being raised about these fossils, including why birds evolved feathers and which was the first bird to fly.
