You can't keep a good man down

Article Abstract:

Michael Portillo is a British politician from the Conservative Party who lost his seat in the 1997 general election. He has been selected as candidate for Kensington and Chelsea in London, England. Portillo has stated that he once experimented with homosexual relationships, but his selection as a candidate does not mean that the Conservative Party has become tolerant of such behavior. Portillo is a good public speaker, and can hide his intelligence well enough to be understood. He is likely to be elected, but will probably still have political enemies.

A long week

Article Abstract:

The British Conservative Party has been affected by libel cases, both a past case involving Jeffrey Archer, and a case being heard in Nov 1999 involving Neil Hamilton, previously an MP for the party, and Mohamed Al Fayed, head of Harrods. Meanwhile, the treasurer of the party, Michael Ashcroft, is taking legal action against the Times newspaper. Ashcroft is the biggest donor to the Conservative Party, while Archer had been the party's candidate for mayor of London. The Hamilton case could lead to changes in the law relating to bribery.
