Zeppelins and the economy of design

Article Abstract:

The re-useable design of a Zeppelin wartime rescue airship could be seen as the precursor to the current ecological arguments. The Zeppelin LZ104 was extended and redesignated L59 and was designed to be dismantled on arrival. Her envelope was to be used for bandages, clothing and tents, the gas-bags were to become sleeping bags and the duralumin space-frame would provide stretchers and a radio mast.Although the attempt was abortive, progressive architects of the 1920s learned many lessons from such technological innovations.

Winterschool: Whose career is it anyway?

Article Abstract:

Winterschool is an important event in the academic calendar and its latest theme was The Line, organized by a group of Newcastle students. Issues considered included rejuvenation of place, economic regeneration and connecting urban spaces. The impact of invisible 'lines' such as postcodes and municipal boundaries, on place and architecture, was explored. The final session explored the nature of professionalism in the post-Thatcher era.

This will bring the South Bank much more into the centre of London, with Embankment station being given an exit to the South Bank next to and in front of the Royal Festival Hall. Architect Richard Rogers, who has put forward the winning proposal, believes that visitor numbers to the South Bank can be doubled.
