china better off taking the cautious tack

Article Abstract:

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) revealed that if Chinese officials use more cautious attitude towards economic reform, greater stability and faster growth rate in the short term would be seen when comparing with rapid reform programs. Cautious reform implies stability reform linking with political, social and economic. Stability is the important factor to maintain legitimacy of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The following shows the growth forecasts in real change in the mainland between 1996-2110 under both cautious and rapid reform strategies. mobile phone number portabilty gets nod

Article Abstract:

The Telecommunications Authority has approved the running of mobile number portability (MNP) from 1 March 1999. Customers would be allowed to keep their original phone numbers if they wish to shift to another mobile network. The MNP would benefit the fair competition of mobile phone market and generate economic benefits of HK$461 mn in the next 10 years. In addition, the authority also approved the introduction of dual-band service which allow operators to offer GSM and PCS services. *

$15 b goes into China Telecom's network

Article Abstract:

China Telecom (Hong Kong) will invest HK$15.44 bn to boost its mobile phone capacity in China in 1998. China Telecom has added 950,000 customers this year, bringing total customers to over 5.2 mn customers. It also won an approval to purchase Jiangsu Mobile BVI for HK$22.6 bn. It will invest HK$9.3 bn to upgrade the network over the next three years. Apart from Jiangsu network, China Telecom now provides mobile phone services in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces. *
