data storage medium of the future in the works

Article Abstract:

Bayer, the German chemicals group and IBM are considering a data storage joint venture. They aim to develop a CD format disk which can hold 1,000 gigabytes of data. The technology is developed by Bayer scientists using a speical plastic as a storage medium which large amount of data can be recorded on the layer by laser. Other companies such as Canon, Sony, Rockweel and Opticome are also aiming for the market. *

Standardization, diversity and learning: strategies for the coevolution of technology and industrial capacity

Article Abstract:

A model of industrial process standardization, diversity and learning is developed. It is demonstrated that the present value of long-run costs can be minimized when the effects of learning through diversity are strong. This can be done through complete standardization or complete experimentation. The relevance to the standardization policies of the US nuclear industry is discussed.

Massive Capacity with Tape Storage System

Article Abstract:

Advanced Digital Information has developed Data Library, a large capacity tape system for Apple computers. Each cartridge contains 170 volumes with forty-eight tracks and thirty-two sectors per track. This system is Corvus network compatible and can be used for disk back-up.
