unlicensed optical disc producers get warning

Article Abstract:

According to Prevention of Copyright Piracy Ordinance, optical discs manufacturing without a valid licence would be regarded as illegal activities effective from 29 August 1998. All legal optical disc produced will be marked with a source code of manufacture. The Customs officers will take inspections on optical disc manufacturing plants to ensure manufacturers follow the ordinance. Anyone who violates the ordinance will be subjected to a maximum fine of HK$1 mn and imprisonment of 4 years. Manufacturers were offered a 3-month grace period from 29 May 1998 to apply for the licence. *

ICAC swoop catches top Customs man

Article Abstract:

The Independent Commission Against Corruption seized up to 8 mn suspected pirated CDs and VDCs worth a total of several hundred million Hong Kong dollars at five factories and two warehouses while investigating a corruption case. During the operation, a stamper, which is a machine using a master disc to create a disc every four seconds, was seized. It is the first time such equipment has been seized in Hong Kong. High-tech equipment seized at the factories is valued at HK$450 mn. *

Article Abstract:

The pirated VCDs of Japanese TV series were sold throughout Hong Kong markets. The Customs and Excise Department has met with representative of Tokyo Broadcasting System, Nippon TV Network, Fiji TV Network, and the Council for Protection of Copyright of TV Programs for seeking the solutions of pirated VCDs. However, the Customs will not take action until it identifies who are appropriate copyright owners. *
