Attention, shoppers: Tags monitor inventory, deter theft-raise privacy fears

Article Abstract:

The radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is expected to explode in the next few years fitting more data on smaller and smaller computer chips and on cutting the price of manufacturers pay for each RFID tag. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. emerged as the leading proponent of using RFID to track cases and pallets of goods as they come into warehouses and stores.

A real supermarket, but not in a suburb

Article Abstract:

The Fresh Grocer, a supermarket operator based in Drexel Hill opened its eighth store in West Philadelphia since there was an acute need for a modern market. The store is 52,000-square foot, which costs about $11.5 million, and it has increased employment with 200 new jobs.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. often has been met by protestors and union organizers when it expands into new areas. But the expansion of Wal-Mart, which is the world's largest company, into the Philadelphia area was met with enthusiasm by shoppers seeking bargains.
