Delta Air Lines Inc. cut its fares on 5 January 2005 by up to 50% for travel in the continental US, prompting fears of a new price war and sending airline stocks sharply lower. Some analysts stated that other carriers would have to match Delta's cuts, and they forecast a gloomy year for the industry as the overall industry revenue could drop by $3 billion a year if every carrier adopts Delta's new rate structure.

Oil prices increase closed to $42 a barrel on May 17, 2004 as the markets shrugged off a Saudi proposal that Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC) raise its official target by 6 percent.
