Economy takes toll on Pew grants

Article Abstract:

The Pew Charitable Trusts, which is Philadelphia's biggest charitable foundation and one of the 10 largest in the nation, is expected to award less grant money in the year 2002 than in 1988 as it faces a decline of more than $1 billion in its endowment since 1999. The Trust has planned to commit $140 million in the year 2002, which is about $110 million less than it committed in 1999.

Keeping philanthropists on course

A conference on philanthropy in the United States, which was organized by Washington, DC-based Council on Foundations, attracted representatives from 686 foundations. In 2000, U.S. foundations provided about $27.6 billion in donations for programs ranging from arts to social services.

Loans to firms in low-income areas rising

Article Abstract:

Banks and financial institutions in Philadelphia made more than half the small-business loans in low- and moderate-income communities in 2003. Loans to small-businesses in low- and moderate-income communities grew from 39 percent of the total in 1998 to 52 percent in 2003.
