French company grows in suburbs

Article Abstract:

Saint-Gobain Corp. of Philadelphia, PA, operates in near-anonymity although it is well known to industry players. It is staffed by almost 23,000 people. Saint-Gobain generated $4.6 billion in sales in 1997 for a gain from $1 billion in sales in 1990. Saint-Gobain president and chief executive officer Gianpaolo Caccini noted that his company needs to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange to gain additional visibility. However, this firm is considered the top manufacturer of insulation, ductile iron pipe, industrial ceramics, and abrasives.
