Gone sour

Article Abstract:

Lycos, a company that bills itself as a comprehensive guide to the World Wide Web, has decided to terminate its two-year contract with EnviroLink, a small, Oakland, CA, network of nonprofit environmental groups. The contract , which was signed in May 1998, calls for EnviroLink to provide Lycos with environmental news and directory of environment-related Web sites. Lycos said it decided to break its alliance with the company after it received numerous angry e-mails from people who reacted to an article in an online magazine, criticizing the company for partnering with a radical environmental Web haven, Envirolink. EnviroLink, on the hand, said Lycos had violated their agreement.

Entangling alliances

Article Abstract:

Two publishing giants, IDG and Ziff-Davis, dominate the computer magazine world, with over 300 magazines and more than 225 Web sites, several hundred books, various trade shows and at least one TV network between them. Ziff-Davis, founded in 1927, is a public company, with Softbank, one of the biggest software companies in the world and is based in Japan, controlling majority share. Meanwhile, IDG, founded in 1964, is privately held and organizes annual events such as the Macworld Expo, offers corporate advice and consulting and operates a proprietary news service. IDG's magazines, around 290, are published in 75 countries.

Sticky wickets

Article Abstract:

Web companies such as Yahoo!, Lycos and Infoseek are personalizing their services to make customers stay and capture more information about them. The companies are ironically using their sites, called search engines, which are used to facilitate the search for information or entertainment on the Web, to make customers stay for as long as possible. Personalization allows customers to have a Web page tailored for them. In exchange, however, customers are required to tell the companies more about themselves, information that could be a significant source of revenue for the companies.
