European drug firms may merge

Article Abstract:

Astra AB and the Zeneca Group acknowledged that they were engaged in "advanced discussions" over the possibility of merging together. Such a deal would create the world's fifth-largest drug manufacturer. According to Rachel Bloom, a spokeswoman for Zeneca, the merger would be between equals. Both firms have more than $80 billion in combined market value. Zeneca and Astra both have clinical trial and drug marketing operations in the Philadelphia area.
