Kvaerner commits to Phila. shipyard

Article Abstract:

Kvaerner Group announced yesterday that it will continue to operate its Philadelphia shipyard if it cannot find a buyer. Harald Rafdal, CEO of Kvaerner Philadelphia Inc., said that he is confident that a buyer will be found. Kvaerner shocked locals Tuesday when it revealed its plans to get out of the shipbuilding business. The company is Europe's largest shipbuilder. The Philadelphia operation in question is going to receive $430 million in government subsidies. It will have a total of 8,000 new shipbuilding jobs. Now, the Philadelphia yard will be offered for sale along with the company's four largest yards. The company declined to name the two potential buyers.

Medicaid is reinstated for 32,000 poor in Pa

Article Abstract:

The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare will reinstate 32,000 poor recipients of Medicaid after previously denying them health care benefits. The decision, which was reached through negotiations with Philadelphia city officials and welfare advocates, mainly will affect city residents, including 24,000 children. The denial of benefits was an adverse consequence of the state's policy of shifting the poor from welfare to work. The withdrawal of benefits sometimes occurred through computer errors.
