Local firms send jobs offshore to survive -- and prosper: Wayne: Push to slash costs for customers

The offshoring of jobs continues to be a controversial issue in the US, with politicians complaining about the below average job growth of the country at a time of increasing global commerce. Priya Hiranandani, the chief executive officer of Zenta Group, whose clients include some of the largest US banks and credit card companies, discusses how offshoring helps organizations cut costs by 40 to 50 percent.

A heated job market lies below the surface: New coal miners are desperately needed

Coal companies in America are in desperate need for coal miners and for this purpose they have rented ad space, billboards, even banner-towing planes at beach resorts with offers of generous pay and benefits. Some of the biggest energy companies said that they need more workers since coal market is booming and providing higher returns.

Jobless claims up by most in 16 months

Article Abstract:

New claims for unemployment benefits increased in first week of April 2004 by 30,000 for their biggest rise in 16 months. The increase was far above the 7,000 rise in new claims that was expected and also the largest one-week gain since December 2002, when the country was struggling to rebound from the 2001 recession.
