Lawsuit is filed againsts auditors of Allegheny

Allegheny Health Systems' lawyers are suing its auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers in a suit filed at the U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh for neglecting to warn them of signs that the system will collapse and for not doing anything to prevent it.

Big insurers to cut Medicare managed-care premiums

Article Abstract:

The major insurers of Philadelphia region are poised to cut premiums for Medicare managed-care plans for 180,000 seniors starting 1st March 2004. The cuts are possible because of the new Medicare prescription-drug law, which funnels a onetime increase of 8 percent to 10 percent in payments to commercial insurers in payments to commercial insurers so they could provide more options to seniors.

Money missing at Allegheny; research projects jeopardized

Article Abstract:

Researchers and physicians at Allegheny hospital discover missing money from the bankrupt hospital. According to physicians and researchers, the hospital's internal accountants revealed that over $17 million in interest income alone is missing from restricted endowments at the hospital's Philadelphia operations and professional schools. Some of the hospital's most prominent faculty have even hired lawyers to recover the cash. Meanwhile, Darwin J. Prockop, director of Allegheny's Center for Gene Therapy in Philadelphia, reported that some private research money has also been tapped.
