New director aims to complete airport plans

PA: Philadelphia International Airport has a new director, Alfred Testa Jr. who is set to oversee completion of its $800 million project. The project entails completion of a fourth runway and an expansion of a terminal, adding two additional concourses. The construction is going to be funded through money from airlines, passengers and other airport users. The new director sees the need for further expansion, a fifth runway and more terminals. The airport accommodates 1,400 flights a day, but feels even broader expansion will attract more airlines and hence more competition.

Jobless rate falls to 4.1%

Article Abstract:

The jobless rate in Pittsburgh, PA, deceased to its lowest level in eight years at 4.1% in June 1998. The decline was attributed primarily because of a declining labor force rather than the presence of additional jobs. After adjusting for seasonal factors such as temporary hiring and end-of-school-year layoffs of teachers and aides, two key measures, namely surveys of local business establishments and of local households indicated a decline in employment in June 1998 from a revised rate of 4.2% in May 1998.
