ESOP power

Article Abstract:

There are at least six ways by which Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) can be used to obtain considerable financial benefits. One advantageous use of ESOPs is in exit strategy planning. Company owners or major stockholders who wish to liquify their investment can obtain tax savings by selling their holdings to company-sponsored ESOPs. A second beneficial application of such a plan is in management succession and ownership transfer planning. A properly designed ESOP can help smoothen the usually turbulent transition of management and ownership of privately held businesses to the next generation. Other applications in which ESOPs can offer financial advantages are in the purchase of capital goods, in business expansion through merger or acquisition, in the reduction of employee benefit costs and in capital formation.
