Piercing Pagoda profits sag

Piercing Pagoda Inc. (Bethlehem, PA) recently acquired four companies, including its major competitor Sedwich Sales Inc. (Nevada), but saw profits dip. The national chain runs kiosks in U.S. malls in 43 states, selling 10 and 14 caret gold jewelry. Profits for same-store sales dipped 3.1 percent. This translates to a 9 percent drop from $11.2 m to $10.2 m. This is the first downward statistics for the company since the acquisitions. Previously, the company had enjoyed four years of expansion. One critic, however, believes the problem is in the company's high expectations of profits and changes resulting from rapid expansion that is not reflected in the corporate structure.

Animal care professionals have described a phenomenon in which pets suffer anxiety due to separation from their owners. The CD recording, which has gained popularity with local pet businesses. pet owners, and animal advocates, has sold 5,000 of the three-disc sets. The CD set, which is available on Amazon.com and at certain Petco stores, has been endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
