Peco begins 'Hometown' bid for users
Article Abstract:
PECO Energy Co (Philadelphia, PA) is launching an advertising campaign to dissuade its electricity customers from shopping around when 10 utilities introduce service in the Philadelphia area in Jan 1999. The commercials in PECO's "Hometown" campaign feature comforting images of small town life, and say that where "outside electric companies . . . see dollar signs," PECO sees "a community where honesty and hard work lead to success." The ads have been criticized as misleading by consumer groups. PECO's own unregulated subsidiary Exelon will offer power for 4.69 cents compared to the unregulated business's 5.65 cents, but it has stopped the broadcast ads which cost it $732,500 in Jul-Sep 1998.
