Price rise for drug outpaces inflation

Article Abstract:

The studies conducted by the 35-million-member retiree group AARP and the consumer group Families USA reported an increase in prices of brand name prescription drugs at more than three times the rates in 2003. The AARP study found that prices increased at an average 6.9 percent for nearly 200 drugs and the increase will negate the value of the discounts available through Medicare's new drug cards.

FDA expands uses for sleep medication

Article Abstract:

Cephalon Inc. approval to sell its narcolepsy drug, Provigil by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is approved only for those who suffer from narcolepsy, a disorder in which people suddenly fall sleep during waking hours. The company may promote Provigil on direct-to-consumer television advertising on order to reach shift workers and those suffering from sleep apnea.

Growing firms with huge potential

Several Philadelphia-based drug and biotechnology firms have been producing high levels of patents for new products. The firms, according to a new report by the U.S. Small Business Administration, were studied to determine the relationship between patents and company profitability.
