S. Jersey Industries: Connectiv's friend and foe

Article Abstract:

South Jersey Industries Inc. (SJI), a supplier of natural gas, has announced two deals that will make it a partner and at the same time a competitor of Connectiv, the Wilmington, DE-based company created through the merger of Delmarva Power and Atlantic Energy. The first transaction calls for SJI to team up with Connectiv to create a company that will oversee billing for Connectiv's 487,000 electric customers and SJI's 260,000 natural gas customers in South Jersey. The second deal calls for SJI to partner with Energy East Corp. to sell electricity and energy management services in Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey, putting the joint venture in direct competition with Connectiv.

Keeping propane in check; a Sharon Hill firm is poised to prosper with a safety device

Article Abstract:

Progressive Technologies Inc has developed a hose that can shut off propane flow immediately if the hose separates from its coupling. The "Lifeline" safety device involves a simple cable mechanism, and is the only low-cost technology available to meet the US Transportation Department's new standards for highway transport trucks for propane. The Sharon Hill company's patent is believed to be strong enough to prevent competitors from marketing safety devices that work within the hose, although devices working outside the hose could still be patented.
