Vanguard's online discount brokerage was launched in early Dec 98, with no advertising campaign or public announcement. The financial services have been phased beginning in 1996, and Vanguard now has about 1000 advisory clients. Industry analysts say that because Vanguard is client owned and lacks large advertising budgets, it has been slow to expand its product line to compete with such firms as T. Rowe Price and Fidelity Investments.
