UGI's improbably deal with Unisource would mix gas, paper

Article Abstract:

UGI Corp., a paper company is hoping to convince investors to allow the acquisition of Unisource Corp, a gas and utilities company with no obvious ties to the paper industry. Investors, analysts are skeptical about the merger, questioning the attempt to boost sagging stocks by joining forces. Ray Mundt, Unisource CEO is planning to retire, also hoping the merger will also take care of his exit from the company with Lon Greenberg UGI CEO stepping into his shoes. Some say the two business are not that dissimilar, noting that both are distribution business with two key points to contend with: gross trading margins and expenses.

Retail SWAT: Gordon Brothers acts as liquidator, healer to firms

Article Abstract:

In 1997, Gordon Brothers Group sold almost $1 billion in merchandise. This was twice the amount that Filene's Basement sold. The company, founded in 1903, has operated as a liquidator for the most part. In order to organize going-out-of-business sales for stores that are about to close, Gordon Brothers sends out a SWAT retail team of 200 specialists to carry out this task. Lately however, the company has been trying to keep retailers in operation, rather than see them close down. Gordon Brothers' chief executive Michael Frieze said that more than 50% of the company's business is with healthy retailers.
