University City Science Center seeks face-lift

Article Abstract:

A 41-year-old University City Science Center on Market Street between 34th and 38th Streets in West Philadelphia has helped to create 350 companies that employ thousands of people but is not largely known in Philadelphia. Los Angeles based Jerde Partnership, an architectural and planning firm with an international reputation helped this center for upgrading and creating a sense of place and regenerating urban environments.

Local college presidents' pay soared

Article Abstract:

An Inquirer survey of tax documents filed by 39 colleges, during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2002, reveal that some college presidents enjoyed salary increases of 22, 34, and 41percent. The big pay to many college professors often frustrates parents, and students when facing tuition increases that routinely outpace inflation.

High debt poses a test for university's future

Article Abstract:

The University of Pennsylvania is shouldering a heavy mantle of $ 1.4 billion in debt and ranks lowest among its Ivy League peers in assets relative to debt. It does not Pennsylvania in financial trouble, but it will make staying competitive harder as the school battles its peers for top students and stellar faculty.
