Savers usually buy investments expecting them to show capital growth, which can incur capital gains tax. Gains made on agricultural property, business assets, land and buildings, shares and securities, unit trusts and woodlands are all liable to capital gains tax. Betting and lottery winning, cars, chattels, decorations medals, enterprise investment schemes, foreign currencies, government securities, life assurance policies, main residences, partnerships, personal equity plans, qualifying corporate bonds, national savings certificates and trust interests are exempt from capital gains tax.
